Photo Challenge

Pareidolia

This week’s challenge was sent in quite some time ago by Jay Linn. Jay, if you’re still reading, this is your week!

Things that look like faces. I just discovered a new word, pareidolia, which describes things that look like faces. There’s even a subreddit with lots of examples – http://www.reddit.com/r/Pareidolia. So, that’s my latest challenge suggestion.

So there you have it. Find something that has a face hidden in it, and photograph it in the best way possible. Try to use the face as part of a larger scene, or to tell a story. Please send your pareidolic pictures in by noon on Tuesday 3rd December. Have fun!

Challenge Admin, I enjoy taking photos mostly of landscapes and architecture - but I will try anything! I mostly shoot film and I spend a lot of time in my darkroom trying to get the perfect print. I'm a sysadmin for a living and I also enjoy cycling and music technology.

  1. Hi All! Sorry not been shooting and posting for a while. Hadn’t realised it had been so long until I took a look this week and realised how many challenges i’ve missed! Hopefully be back more regularly now :-)

Here is my entry for this week……

  3. Hello Photo Challenge!

Well, I haven’t taken part in months and months and months, and then Jonathan decides to use my suggestion from aaaaaages ago, dangling the carrot of getting me back on board into the bargain.

But it turns out that pareidolic pictures are *really bloody hard* to come by! I went out for a drive the other day, to do some errands, and at the same time was constantly looking for opportunities to make a face out of something. I wasn’t realy comfortable just snapping the gable end of a house with two upper windows and a ground-floor door, or other similarly unimaginative scenarios, but I just couldn’t find a bloody thing!

And then I found some silly little toys at home that had unintentional faces in them but I couldn’t find a way to make them remotely interesting, and since this is about producing interesting pictures I nixed that idea. The end result is that despite a few hours of trying, I have nothing for you, my dear Challenge.

So, long story short, I still watch the Photo Challenge just about every week but I’ve completely lost my mojo which is why I haven’t contributed in such a long time. I even failed to take part in my own challenge. I am all teh lamez :(

  4. Aah Jay, don’t feel bad….. I am going through a similar time myself.

I find that when my mojo is low simply taking a photo of anything everyday no matter how inspiring the photo is helps me to keep the camera in my hand. When I stop taking a photo everyday it is like the creative part of my brain goes to sleep! It has been asleep for quite a few months now and I needed a kick up the rear…..

For you to know, your challenge inspired me to get back into taking photos for this group. Photo challenge was the first website photography challenge I ever took part in so I feel very loyal to it – i’ve just slipped out of the habit of checking in lately.

I set a challenge for a group on flickr on a weekly basis and struggle to do that myself all the time! ‘Faces in places’ was the challenge I set on Flickr back in January this year (http://www.flickr.com/groups/ourdailychallenge/discuss/72157632639388666/?search=faces) and I didn’t enter that myself at the time either as I had the same experience you described above. I did LOVE that everyone else was inspired by the challenge and enjoyed seeing their interpretations of the challenge so I hope even though you haven’t entered you are proud with the results we give you this week.

Don’t put too much pressure on yourself that a photo needs to be interesting as every photo has a story :)

Please come back and post soon, let us give you feedback and encouragement with any photo you take, that is what the group is about.

Btw Jonathan – never thought before but if you ever want to use any of my challenges I set on flickr as part of this group – feel free :)
