We’ve had a series of relatively easy challenges recently – so now it’s time for a tricky one. You get the double challenge of taking a technically good photo, and also posing for a photo.
This week you should take a self portrait. If possible, use a tripod or rest your camera on a table while using the self timer – try to avoid taking an arms’-length “selfie”.
Pay attention to the lighting. You don’t need fancy equipment – you can easily use light from a window. There are lots of guides out there, for example this one. It’s usually best to avoid the built-in flash on your camera – this is rarely flattering.
After you’ve sorted out the camera and the lighting, it’s time to think about you. The very best portraits tell the viewer something about the subject – perhaps by reflecting the surroundings or by using a prop.
Have fun with this one – experiment, try things and learn as you go. I’m hoping for a wide variety of interesting interpretations this week.
Please send your entries in by noon on Tuesday 20th August. Good luck!
