Reflection – Results

We have 15 fantastic entries this week – including two from new people. Please welcome Dave and Dawn :)

Challenge Admin, I enjoy taking photos mostly of landscapes and architecture - but I will try anything! I mostly shoot film and I spend a lot of time in my darkroom trying to get the perfect print. I'm a sysadmin for a living and I also enjoy cycling and music technology.

  1. Err, technical hitch with the image gallery this week. Please hold on while I hit the web server with a hammer until it does as I tell it! ;)

  2. OK – panic over. Looks to me like the gallery thumbnails are working, and you get the popup large versions when you click on them. Any problems – let me know!

  3. I feel the urge to explain myself… I noticed a while ago that when I am brushing my teeth and sitting on the edge of the bath, I disappear. It’s quite a profound sensation to look up at a mirror square on and not see yourself. It doesn’t come over in the image so well… oh well. The ice formations in William’s are amazing! Cedric’s idea is clever, and I like the colour change in the reflected image from Jess.

  4. I like the composition and engaging subject of Robert‘s picture, and Cedric‘s well-conceived illusion. Nice colour effect from Jess, too.

My picture was a last-minute lazy effort of a bauble in a clearance sale in a shop. I like the colours, and of course, who could resist my charming face? :P

  5. To quote Ollie: “The ice formations in William’s are amazing”, it intrigues me even in thumbnail size, and the colours give off an atmosphere. Cedric’s idea and use of the wood textures are really interesting too.

  6. Hi everybody :) I thought I’d start the photo challenge this year to help improve my photo skills, meet some like minded people and learn from others. Feedback is always welcome, even if you think my photo is rubbish! I thought I would photograph myself as an introduction and I don’t have any photos of me with my camera.

I really liked Cedric and Ollie’s photos, both very clever and eye catching.

  7. Awesome entries this week. I feel shameful that I didn’t enter… I was overthinking and never quite got to the realisation.

  8. Hi Dave, and welcome! I think I have been learning as much, if not more, from looking at other people’s responses to the challenge – possibly partly due to my sporadic participation… Somewhere in the ‘usual rules’ it says about avoiding critiquing and focussing on the positives. I guess there is a fine line between constructive comments and criticism, but here goes! Recently, I’ve been noticing what my eye falls on in an image – when it isn’t the obviously intended focus I try to think about why this is the case. With yours the picture in the background seems to detract from what I assume is the focus (the camera), this makes me more aware of the background in my photos – but overall a good contribution to the challenge, nicely composed and well balanced! Like I say, I probably learn more from other people’s submissions :)

  9. Well done to all, Some very interesting photos and so many different ways to reflect something. All are very good but i really like Cedric, Maryah and Jess. Cedric’s is very clever how you have managed to line all the lines up. Maryah is just one of those moments all photographers want when taking wildlife photos and i like how the colour changes on Jess’s photo.

  10. really like cedrics photo! but all great :) didn’t get much time for my photo so didn’t come out great!

  11. Wow. Awesome entries! I really love William’s shot, such a unique sight, the icicles where they are, some of them curved like claws, and then to have the water and reflection underneath..it reminds me of a scene in the movie Legend. I also was going to mention Dave’s photo, my eyes go to the picture in the background too but i kinda like it tho, i feel like it is a clue as to the character of the man behind the lens :-P . Twiggy’s is beautifully done. I also like the clever use of reflection in Robert’s, it’s a very eye-catching photo with its vibrant colors. Lastly, i like the sideways reflection of Nick’s and how much it captures of the area that we can’t see and i like the optical illusion of Cedric’s. As for my shot, i was going for 2 different reflections, not 2 colors lol. I added a tiny bit of saturation to emphasize it but it really just happened on its own. Welcome to our newcomers!

  12. Thanks for your comments Ollie and Jess – I know what you mean. I hadn’t noticed on the small LCD of my 20d, but when I postprocessing it became obvious. I’ll keep it in mind for future shots, thanks :)

  13. Thanks for your comment Jess.
My favourite has to be William’s with Twiggy’s and Jess’s close runners-up
