This week, we are publishing the macro mystery pictures. As of today, you have one week to guess what all of these pictures are. Please leave your guesses in the comments! Next Tuesday, we will reveal the zoomed-out versions of the pictures.

Challenge Admin, I enjoy taking photos mostly of landscapes and architecture - but I will try anything! I mostly shoot film and I spend a lot of time in my darkroom trying to get the perfect print. I'm a sysadmin for a living and I also enjoy cycling and music technology.

  4. Paul H : A plant or fungus of some sort. Wort perhaps?
    Lee G : That’s really close up! No idea.
    Julia G : Timber, probably from engineered flooring, one of the lighter species of European oak at a guess.
    Robert : There’s some weird lighting there. I’m guessing it’s a nylon roller or bumper of some kind.
    Michal B : A stamen. Or a pistil. Or whatever those things are called in the middle of a flower.
    Colin B : Nutcracker? Garlic press? Probably a small kitchen tool of some sort.
    Carole A : A tater masher, just like in the examples from last time!
    Guneet : Well, a control switch od some sort, obviously. From a video camera perhaps?
    Kirsty G : A handle, but of what? A draughtsman’s straight edge? A collapsible sewing box?
    Jonathan G : Gills of a mushroom?
    Katey B : ???
    Marc van L : Hair brush.

  5. I’ve just added Jess’s entry. It was posted before noon in EST, and the rules of the Photo Challenge didn’t explicitly state that we are using GMT, so we’ll allow it this time! I’ve now fixed that particular loophole ;)

    Jonathan: Confusing… a mushroom? or something similar? I’m stuck on yours…
    Michal: Thin lights? (You know, loads of wires with leds on the ends which you can twist and move…? Christmas tree lights?)

    Michal – a safety pin or metal jewellery clasp

    Lisa-I’m thinking bath salts, which are fairly larger than sugar or table salt/I suppose it could be small aquarium rocks too

    Michael-originally I was thinking a fruit stem on like a pear, but after seeing some comments I now have to agree with flower stamen
    Jonathan-it’s probably a mushroom but I’m gonna be different and guess layers of flower petals
    Robert-I thought wheel right away, but to what?

    Lee-maybe a hive/nest of some kind or pebbly ground?
