Shadows

As the sun is so bright this week, and sunset is late, I think we should make use of the bright, direct light.

This week the name of the Challenge is shadows. Take a picture of anything you like, but the shadow should be the main part of the image, rather than the object that is casting the shadow. (Although you can of course include the object too).

If you are stuck for inspiration, have a look at the Google image search for shadows.

Please send your shadow pictures in by noon on Tuesday 5th June. Good luck!

Challenge Admin, I enjoy taking photos mostly of landscapes and architecture - but I will try anything! I mostly shoot film and I spend a lot of time in my darkroom trying to get the perfect print. I'm a sysadmin for a living and I also enjoy cycling and music technology.

A poor image of a fabulous sight, taken on my phone. Even if I’d had a decent camera with me I could’ve only got a few shots because the light was changing so quickly in the late evening sunshine. What pleases me so much is that you can actually see the shadows as three-dimensional objects rather than the flattened things we are used to seeing cast on floors and walls. The backlit foreground at the bottom is a bonus, too, as is the light halo effect caused by using a crappy HTC phone camera.

Sometimes it is important to try not to be picky and let the thing depicted speak for itself regardless of the poverty of image quality. One of my big beefs with excellent photographs by excellent photographers is that all too often they look professional photographer-y. This is not a problem I am likely to endure.

  4. This is my first time entering a photo. I’m an amateur photographer trying to bring my skills to a more professional level (still have a long way to go though :-P ). Didn’t have a ton of time to explore, but found an old beat up scoreboard at a baseball field, made for an interesting shadow I thought.
