Product shot

Your Challenge this week, as suggested by both Stu and Paul in the past, is to take a product shot.

Imagine you are taking a photo that could be used on packaging, on a large poster or a sample on a website. Pick a product from around your home (or buy something!) and take a product shot of it. It’s up to you how you choose to display your chosen product.

Here are some examples to show the kind of thing I’m looking for:

The main things to remember:

  • You will need more light than you think! A desk lamp or bright torch would be ideal.
  • Using your camera’s built-in flash can sometimes cause unpleasant glare. If you can get enough light from a lamp or a window, try turning your flash off.
  • Think about the background. To avoid having a seam, you could try attaching a piece of paper near the bottom of a wall, so it curves onto the floor.
  • You may equally decide you don’t want a seamless background.
  • You don’t have to do a tabletop-sized item, either.

Good luck with this Challenge! Please send your results in by noon on Tuesday 15th June.

  • Right. I’m going to pull my finger out and take part this week. I’ve missed the last three through holidays and general lack-of-enthusiasm so I’m going to get right back on it this week.

Hehe… and there was me thinking “Well, it’s definitely going to be Paul ‘winning’ this week” :)

  • I had an idea last night, a way to move me outside my still life comfort zone and make me try something new.

So this week, I will be taking part, but I will be shooting my product shot on 120roll film – I have a plan, and I think I can pull it off and get the negs developed/scanned over the weekend. Wish me luck!

    film?

  • Sounds good, Paul. Pretty ambitious to get your film shot, developed, scanned and edited in under a week :)

  • Damn. The “shoot it on film” plan isn’t going to work, as it’s Monday night and I don’t have any developer or fixer. Developer I could work withought (coffee and washing soda works fine) but I don’t have any good DIY fixer recipes.

At least I remembered to check before loading the film into the tank!

So, I’ll have to go with the backup digital shot :-(

  • Quick, Paul, get to my house now! I have all of the things you need!

I hope you’ll still publish the film version in due course, so we can see how it turned out :)

  • [...] have just under 27 hours to get your entries in for this week’s Photo Challenge. I did mine at the weekend, thanks to Kath & Mike’s kind loan of their allotment on [...]
